SEC Power Rankings Week 5

1. Alabama (4-0, 2-0)
This is by far the best offense that Nick Saban has had, and even though the Tide are somewhat vulnerable defensively— it will take an A+ game by anyone to even make it interesting against this team.

2. Georgia (4-0, 2-0)
For the first time this season, Georgia looked to have humans playing on their football team. The first half was a different Georgia team than we’ve seen this season, and some costly turnovers took the breath out of Mizzou.

3. LSU (4-0, 1-0)
LSU continues to skate by on thin ice. Is luck running out on the Tigers ? Or will they continue to escape? One thing is for sure— you cannot let the Tigers linger around.

4. Kentucky (4-0, 2-0)
Nobody is a bigger surprise than Kentucky. The success of the Wildcats is a perfect example of what happens if you allow a coach to shape his culture at a program. I’m interested to see if the ‘Cats can keep scrapping. A win over Florida was one thing, but now Kentucky duplicated that with another impressive performance against Mississippi State.

5. Auburn (3-1, 1-1)
Auburn responded with a 31-point victory over Arkansas on Saturday night. The crushing loss to LSU was a big blow, but Auburn just needs to stay afloat in the west and continue to improve each week. Other than a tough road game at Mississippi State in two weeks, Auburn doesn’t play another ranked opponent until November.

6. Mississippi State (3-1, 0-1)
Things might look dim in Starkville after the loss to Kentucky, but look the Wildcats are better than anyone is giving them credit for. An interesting battle with Florida is ahead as the Bulldogs will try to bounce back.

7. Florida (3-1, 1-1)
Florida capitalized off of six Tennessee turnovers and brutalized QB Jarrett Guarantano all night. The Gators are still figuring out who they are, but I think they’re learning more and more about themselves after every week.

8. Texas A&M (2-2, 0-1)
The Aggies two losses came Clemson and Alabama and they have been each of those teams’ biggest challenges to date by far. Jimbo Fisher has clearly already put his fingerprints on this program.

9. South Carolina (2-1, 1-1)
Due to Tropical Storm Florence, South Carolina had to wait a week to get back on the right footing after the loss two weeks ago to Georgia. The Gamecocks did just that with a resounding 23-point win over a solid Vanderbilt team.

10. Ole Miss (3-1, 0-1)
It’s going to take me awhile to get over the beatdown by Alabama, but Ole Miss has the potential to put some scares in some teams on their schedule. Ole Miss heads to Baton Rouge on Saturday and I think the Rebels will make it interesting.

11. Missouri (3-1, 0-1)
Mizzou at least made the ‘Dawgs sweat a little, but too many mistakes to upset one of the nation’s best teams. Still Missouri showed me enough to know that they can play with anybody. The Tigers have a much-better defense than they get credit for, and possibly the nation’s best gunslinger in Drew Lock. Missouri will make some noise this year, but let a golden opportunity slip by against Georgia.

12. Vanderbilt (3-1, 0-1)
After a strong performance in South Bend, Vanderbilt came into Saturday’s matchup with South Carolina feeling like they matched up well with the Gamecocks. The Commodores simply didn’t bring it, starting slow and even though they made a run in the second half— it wasn’t enough to pull off the comeback.

13. Tennessee (2-2, 0-1)
Jeremy Pruitt’s SEC debut didn’t go as he had planned as the Vols were pummeled by Florida at home. This program has a long way to go, but I think the Vols will improve each week and that’s all that Pruitt and his team can focus on right now. Focus on getting better and playing hard every week, and not wins and losses right now.

14. Arkansas (1-3, 0-1)
Despite losing by 30 points, the Hogs actually had more yards than the Tigers if you can believe that. The score was actually much closer than the score indicated. I believe Chad Morris’ team will get better and better each week, and by season’s end could be that spoiler to somebody.
