Week 2 college football TV schedule and open thread

Here’s what to watch before the Gators play today.

After a successful showing in last Saturday’s opener, the Florida Gators and new head coach Dan Mullen will begin conference play this evening and look to extend their win streak against Kentucky to 32.

Today’s daytime schedule is a little light on the marquee matchups, most of the second week action is taking place in the night shift – during Florida’s contest with the visiting ‘Cats. However, there is one SEC East rivalry that may hold some interest this afternoon.

So as you wait for the Gators to take the field, feel free to hang out in this thread while watching any of today’s games.

Here are our picks for today’s viewing windows:

Early (12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Eastern)

Arizona at Houston (12:00 p.m., ABC/ESPN2): New Arizona coach Kevin Sumlin returns to his old stomping grounds when the Wildcats visit the Cougars. Watch for Houston standout defensive tackle Ed Oliver against hyped Arizona QB Khalil Tate.

Mississippi State at Kansas State (12:00 p.m., ESPN): After barely escaping FCS opponent South Dakota, the Wildcats play host to the Bulldogs. MSU signal caller Nick Fitzgerald – who has missed the Bulldogs’ last three games dating back to last season – is expected back on the field in Manhattan.

UCLA at Oklahoma (1:00 p.m., FOX): On paper at its initial scheduling, this game probably looked like a marquee out-of-conference match-up early in the season. But interest has waned (and the Sooners have opened as big favorites) after the Bruins’ slumped in 2017 and dropped their 2018 opener (Chip Kelly’s debut) last week against Cincinnati.

In other games: Western Michigan travels to Michigan (ESPN) with both teams looking for their first win of the season after dropping their inaugural 2018 games; and Georgia Tech is at USF for the first ever match-up between those programs (ABC/ESPN2). Both of these games are at noon.

Afternoon (3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern)

Georgia at South Carolina (3:30 p.m., CBS): The biggest game in the afternoon slate is this early season SEC East showdown. Georgia has won four of the last five in this series, but South Carolina has managed to pick up three of their last four at home. Steve Spurrier’s anti-Bulldog magic is gone from Columbia, but maybe Will Muschamp has something up his sleeve?

Colorado at Nebraska (3:30 p.m., ABC): This will be Scott Frost’s debut with the Huskers, as their opener against Akron was washed out. Now Nebraska gets to start their season with the once rival Buffs coming to town. Circle this game as one with a potential for points.

In other games: Several SEC teams will spend their second week hosting midday games against lighter competition. There’s Arkansas State at Alabama (3:30 p.m., ESPN2), SIU at Ole Miss (4:00 p.m., SECN), and ETSU at Tennessee (4:00 p.m., SECN).

Evening (7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern)

Obviously, you will be watching the Gators host the Kentucky Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on the SEC Network.

And here is your schedule table for today’s games.
