Weekend Open Thread: Busy weekend in Gainesville

New, 5 comments

Many Florida teams are hosting at home this weekend.

Most of the Florida Gators in action this week are at home in Gainesville - with baseball and gymnastics hosting rivals, but a few squads are competing at championships and events out of town.

Below you’ll find what is happening in Gator sports this weekend, as well as how to follow along.

Friday, February 22

Swimming and diving
SEC Championships, All day: It’s day four of competition for the Gators. Florida finished the third day with its men’s team in the lead and its women’s team in second place. Friday’s events include 200 fly, 100 back, and 100 breast, women’s platform, and 400 medley relay.

Track and field
SEC Indoor Championships, 4:30 p.m.: Florida’s teams are in Fayetteville competing for indoor titles. Last season, the Gator men and women finished third and sixth, respectively.

Women’s tennis
Florida vs. Oklahoma, 5:00 p.m.: The Gators host the Sooners in a return to dual match action, and hope to returning to their winning ways after falling to FSU earlier in the week.

Softball
Florida vs. Illinois State, 5:00 p.m.: This is already the third time that the Gators and Redbirds have met in this very young season - and won’t even be the last time the two meet this weekend. No. 3 Florida is hosting the Bubly Invitational this weekend in Gainesville.

Baseball
Florida vs. Miami, 6:00 p.m.: The Hurricanes come to town for a three-game weekend series with the Gators, who had a rough week with two lopsided midweek losses to USF and UNF.

Gymnastics
Florida vs. Georgia, 6:45 p.m.: The No. 3 Gators host the rival No. 7 Bulldogs. The story of the evening will likely be the Baumann sisters competing against each other for the first time - sophomore Alyssa with Florida and freshman Rachel with Georgia.

Softball
Florida vs. A&M, 7:30 p.m.: Invitational competition continues with the Rattlers. Coming into the weekend, the Gators have a perfect (18-0) all-time record against FAMU.

Saturday, February 23

Swimming and diving
SEC Championships, All day: The Gators conclude competition. Saturday’s events include the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, men’s platform, swim 1650 free, and 400 free relay.

Softball
Florida vs. Illinois State, 11:00 a.m.: Once again, the Gators and Redbirds meet. Coming into the weekend, Florida had won their last 12 against ISU.

Lacrosse
Florida vs. Loyola, 12:00 p.m.: One of the few Florida teams on the road this weekend, No. 5 UF lacrosse travels to Loyola for a top-20 match-up with the No. 16 Greyhounds.

Softball
Florida vs. Syracuse, 1:30 p.m.: The Gators’ second game Saturday is against the visiting Orange. Florida is 3-0 all-time against ‘Cuse coming into the game.

Track and field
SEC Indoor Championships, 3:55 p.m.: The Gators have a full afternoon and evening of final events on deck. Streaming of the action starts at 3:55 p.m.

Men’s basketball
Florida vs. Missouri, 4:00 p.m.: After their big road win over LSU, the Gators return home to host the Tigers. It’ll be 90’s day at the O’Dome - with throwback uniforms and the 93-94 team in the house.

Baseball
Florida vs. Miami, 6:30 p.m.: The Gators continue their series with the ‘Canes. Coming into the weekend, Florida has won their last four series with Miami, dating back to 2015, and 12 of their last 15 games with the Hurricanes.

Sunday, February 24

Softball
Florida vs. Syracuse, 12:00 p.m.: The Gators are back for the third and last day of the Bubly Invitational, again playing the Orange.

Baseball
Florida vs. Miami, 1:00 p.m.: The Gators end their three-game run with the Hurricanes. Coming into the weekend, Florida had 15 players make their UF debuts over the first five games.

Softball
Florida vs. Florida A&M, 2:30 p.m.: Wrapping things up in Gainesville for the weekend, the Gators finish with the Rattlers.

Women’s tennis
Florida vs. UCF, 5:30 p.m.: The Gators head to Lake Nona for a date with the Knights as part of USTA’s College Match Day festivities.
