Week 2 college football open thread: Eyes deep in the heart

A showdown between top-10 teams in the Lone Star State is the day’s biggest game.

The second full week of the 2019 college football schedule is the first one that the Florida Gators are fully participating in, after their Week Zero win and a Week 1 bye.

But you could be forgiven for believing that games other than Florida’s meeting with Tennessee-Martin might be the day’s best contests.

The best one on the board seems clear to me: Top-10 teams LSU and Texas are meeting in Austin on ABC at 7:30 p.m., in the first game of a home-and-home series that will take the Longhorns to Baton Rouge in 2020. The Tigers garnered a fair bit of buzz for flattening Georgia Southern in their opener, while Texas appears to have turned a corner under Tom Herman after its Sugar Bowl blasting of Georgia last bowl season.

But the day’s other huge game is also one featuring a team from the Lone Star State, as the 3:30 p.m. window on ABC opens its year-long competition with the Eye Network on Saturday afternoons with reigning national champion Clemson hosting Texas A&M a year after the Aggies threw a scare into the Death Valley denizens in College Station. Sure, that Clemson team hadn’t turned its offense over to Trevor Lawrence yet, but Jimbo Fisher’s program still managed to come closer to derailing what would become a perfect season than any other team did.

Other than those two games, though, this is a weekend for cupcakes. No other matchups of ranked squads are happening, and I doubt that we’re going to get a lot of drama out of most of the day’s games, with some of the best early-season conference games — Miami taking on North Carolina or Stanford meeting USC, for example — saved for the night window.

As always, I’ll be in and out all day, but feel free to discuss everything about Week 2 here.
